Spotlight: Aurora Matrix

GURL: Give us a little introduction to yourself?

Aurora: My name is Aurora Matrix and I am a Drag queen here in Toronto. My drag is heavily influenced by her Chinese culture and strives to be a role model for queer Asian youth.

GURL: How did your drag journey begin?

Aurora: I’ve been involved in theatre since I was 3 years old and have been playing in makeup since 2016. So one day, I decided to put the two together and try out drag. That’s kind of how Aurora came to be.

GURL: Sounds like you had quite a natural progression into drag, having a theatrical background is definitely an advantage. We’re very glad you decided to give it a go and presented the world with a wonderful artists.

GURL: What would you say are your best skills as a queen?

Aurora: As a queen, I would say that I’m known for my makeup. I love the ability to express my creativity through makeup, ranging from simple neutral looks to bold colourful looks. Other than that, I would say my dancing. I’m known for performing with tons of splits, spins and tricks, so you can always expect a full theatrical performance from me.

GURL: A stunning doll who knows how to entertain a crowd, what more can we ask for really?

GURL: Which of your looks do you feel is the most iconic and on brand to who you are?

Aurora: I would say my Chinese Barbie look represents my drag really well. I think this look is a great example of how I integrate my culture into my drag.

GURL: It’s a gorgeous look overall and the fact that it brings elements of your culture is definitely a bonus. We’re putting you on our Christmas list!

GURL: How do you feel the industry has changed since the Drag Race hype?

Aurora: Drag race has made drag so mainstream, which has allowed local drag performers to be recognized more. It has also given local performers the opportunity to show off what they’ve got.

GURL: We’ve definitely been pleased to see drag taking over the world but you’re absolutely right, giving local artists more opportunities and exposure is one of the best things to come from the show – we love seeing great artists get the chance to shine.

GURL: Do you have any interest in competing yourself?

Aurora:  Of course! I feel like it would be a great opportunity to push myself and challenge my creativity. Hopefully someday this can be a reality!

GURL: We will definitely keep our fingers crossed to see you on our screens some time, we can see you going far in the competition.

GURL: Have you got any advice to share with our queer youth?

Aurora: Be true to who you are. Don’t change who you are just to fit in and appeal to others. No one can do you better than you so own that.

GURL: Couldn’t have put it better ourselves!

GURL: If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?

Aurora: There is so much hatred and negativity in the world, especially in the past year. I hope for love and peace, and for people to celebrate each other rather than tear each other down.

GURL: This is a world we can get behind, uplifting each other and enjoying our unique selves without the need for needlessly negative commentary. Let’s just all have a kiki.

GURL: What is your biggest aspiration for the future?

Aurora: To represent for queer Asian folx. I want to be someone who queer Asian youth can look up to since that was something I wanted and needed when I was little.

GURL: You’re already doing a great job of representing your culture, we’re rooting for you to keep rising to give the community both a role model and fill them with their own aspirations.

GURL: Which three of your fellow drag stars would you take on a world tour if given the chance?

Aurora:  I would bring Steak, Aurélie Talented, and Star with me on a world tour. Three talented babes that I love!

GURL: Can we book our tickets now? We’ll be in the front row living our best lives for all four of you wonderful artists.
