Heavy metal and drag had a Welsh baby, let’s see how that turned out!
GURL: First things first; introductions, who the hell are ya?
Plop: I’m Plop. I’m that screaming welsh twat with the shitty dreadlocks. I’m one of the founding cast members of Sunday Night Live and one half of the gone but not forgotten Drag Idol Newcastle 2017 winners The Dragon And The Whale.
GURL: How long have you been performing?
Plop: Since 2007/2008 I think. I got bullied into entering the Swansea Drag Idol and won. That opened my eyes to it all basically. So then I did the Cardiff one the next year, won that, then did Drag Idol UK in London the same year and came 3rd overall. I started doing it professionally after that. I gave it up though when my mam fell ill. I was her carer before she passed away, so I couldn’t really travel or anything so drag had to be put on hold. I lost interest in it for a while then until I entered the Newcastle Drag Idol in 2016 and picked it back up from there.
GURL: What’s been your favourite performance so far?
Plop: Right, I’ve got 2 that really stick out for me for different reasons. The first one is a performance I did on the main stage at Swansea Pride 2010. Drag was way different back then. Noone really had laptops or editing software or anything like that, so there wasn’t a lot of imagination there at the time. Most acts would just come out and sing ABBA or something. I came out and chainsawed Osama Bin Laden’s face off ‘n shit. It was lovely. It was something totally new at the time, so I’m still really proud of it. I’d never get away with it now though!
The other one is when the Klub Kids booksd me for a show in Cardiff with Laganja, Kim Chee and Dusty Ray Bottoms. Everyone knows I’m a massive patriot. I put together a welsh number for Drag Idol 2016 which I was really proud of, and I revamped it and made it better for Sunday Night Live when we did “Around The World”. I always dreamt of performing that number in Wales in front of Welsh people where they actually knew the words to Sosban Fach and would actually sing along n shit. So doing that in Cardiff in front of people I hadn’t seen for years was amazing. It was like a homecoming. I got really sentimental about it (I’ve got a video of it but it’s too large to send. I think there’s snippets of it on my Instagram highlights though)
GURL: A rare sentimental moment from Plop, what is this world coming to? Totally check out the Instagram highlights for some absolute hilarity!
GURL: Show us one of your most fabulous looks?
Plop: Well, I’m not really a “look queen” to say the least lol. I can’t do hair, make up or even dress myself properly half the time. I did quite like that gangster Beetlejuice shit I wore at pride though. That was nice.
GURL: Eat us xo
GURL: Who are your biggest idols?
Plop: (This is where everyone expects me to say Sharon Needles) King Diamond, Rob Halford, Dani Filth, Ozzy Osbourne and Oderus Urungus.
GURL: Tell us something absolutely random about yourself?
Plop: Someone once shat in my face and I still don’t know of it was done on purpose or not…but you can hear aaaaaall about that on Badwearday’s GURL podcast!
GURL: Honestly, that episode ain’t for the faint hearted, go listen here!
GURL: Any advice for someone wanting to embrace the art of drag?
Plop: Well now’s the time to do it really. In recent years Drag has completely exploded. When I first started out there was only a handful of queens. There was no Drag Race, no YouTube tutorials, no variety and not really many outlets to do it. Now there’s fuckin millions of queens, Kings and a million other sub-genres of drag. You can literally be or do anything you want now. Sometimes I think I’ve seen it all, but I still have my eyes opened every single day. If you wanna perform, you can do that. If you wanna just get all arty on your chops and take some pics you can do that too. Best advice anyone ever gave me is “be yourself”. I know it sounds cheesy and cliche, but it really is as simple as that. Just do whatever it is you wanna do. If people like it great. If not, fuck em luv innit..
GURL: One song to be your anthem, go!
Plop: Sosban Fach!
GURL: We honestly expected nothing less haha
GURL: If you had to recommend us a fellow fierce entertainer, who should we hit up?
Plop:: Well Baron’s making waves for the Kings at the moment, but I’m sure you’ll be speaking to him anyway lol.
GURL: One of our favourite people in the whole damn world – give Baron a follow here!
GURL: Finally, what’s your fave design from our collection?
Plop: Obviously the limited edition Badly Drawn Plopalina t-shirt!
GURL: Ah a true classic, gone but never forgotten!
