GURL: Give us a little introduction to who you are?
Michael: I’m an actor, writer, producer, and director, even (I know, a lot of titles). I’m passionate about showcasing LGBT stories in an authentic way. Originally from Philadelphia, where Interested In is set, but currently live in NYC.
GURL: So tell us more about “Interested In” – what is the series all about?
Michael: Interested In is about the equally awkward and steamy sexual encounters of a recently out college student. It follows Parker’s life through vignettes as he begins to understand his new identity.
GURL: What inspired you to create a YouTube series?
Michael: I was so lost after I came out. Most of the queer narratives at the time ended when the gay character coming out. We’ve all seen that narrative, but I wanted to know what happened after the closet. So I picked up where those stories ended. I also wanted to create a sex positive, naturalistic show exploring the nuance of what it means to be a gay man. I actually wrote the first draft of the series in college (it was a long time coming). I was tired of playing straight characters in my acting classes. At the time, there were only a handful of gay roles deemed worth studying. So I created characters that I wish existed.
GURL: How many series are you planning right now?
Michael: I’m currently working on Season 2 of Interested In with the same team! We’re in pre-production and the season is looking amazing. We have some fantastic guest stars in the works. GURL: Were any of the episodes based on real life experiences?
Michael: Ha! I never know how to answer this question. I think the heart of each episode comes from a real-life emotional experience. But I turned those emotions into something that I hope is relatable to watch!
