Spotlight: Rujazzle

Gurl News: First things first; introductions, who the hell are ya?

Rujazzle: Hi darlings! I’m Rujazzle, the Scottish masterpiece! I’m known for my colourful arty looks and eclectic performances, and also producing lots of shows and events here in Glasgow. I’ve also had my artwork recognised by the BBC, the Tate, and exhibited in the V & A.

Gurl News: How long have you been performing?

Rujazzle: I started drag when I was in high school, almost 10 years ago (gross!), but I’ve been performing and doing shows and such the past 5! Although by the state my poor body is in, you would think it would be more! Haha!

Gurl News: What’s been your favourite performance so far?

Rujazzle: I love anything that is conceptual, tells a story and combines lots of human emotions (laughter and sadness!). I really love making performances, but one of my favourites to do is my Operation number! Inspired by the board game, I have little body parts attached to me, that I gradually remove during the number. So stupid, but I think it’s hilarious and touching!

Gurl News: This is absolutely fantastic, well thought out and a total giggle!

Gurl News: Show us one of your most fabulous looks?

Rujazzle: I’ve done a couple photo series (with photographer glasgowqueens) where we recreated and ‘queered’ iconic artworks through a drag look. I absolutely adore the Van Gogh Sunflowers image we created, as the colours are gorgeous and it really captures the juxtaposition of beauty and sadness in the original artwork.

Gurl News: This is so stunning, love the idea behind it too

BWD: Who are your biggest idols?

Rujazzle: I’m going to be a total art nerd here and only pick artists! I’d say Andy Warhol ( a bit of an asshole, but a genius), Frida Kahlo (talented and such a badass) and Charles Rennie Macintosh (a Glasgow legend)!

Gurl News: Tell us something absolutely random about yourself?

Rujazzle: I don’t know how gross or weird this is, but I’m kind of obsessed with mushrooms (the food kind!) and probably eat them in some form almost every single day.

Gurl News: I’m sure that one will split the audience a bit. Every day though, that’s impressive!

Gurl News: Any advice for someone wanting to embrace the art of drag?

Rujazzle: Find what unique talents, outlooks and visions you have inside you, and channelling them through your drag! The world is rather saturated with a LOT of drag at the moment (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing), so think about what unique qualities you bring to the table, and it will help you go far! Drag is limitless, transgressive and inherently queer so take it anywhere you want to go!

Gurl News: One song to be your anthem, go!

Rujazzle: Aww that’s a toughie as I’m such a music lover. If I had to choose one song, it would probably be ‘Electric Feel’ by MGMT, such a tune! I’ve been a fan of the band for years, so it’s super nostalgic, and is both sexy and danceable.

Gurl News:
OMG we absolutely love this one, brb just going for a bedroom disco

Gurl News: If you had to recommend us a fellow fierce entertainer, who should we hit up?

Rujazzle: My good friend Juniper Lovelace is an incredible upcoming drag artist and creates incredibly beautiful and intelligent looks and performances. Check her out!

Gurl News: Immediately followed, what a beautiful queen <3

Gurl News: Finally, what’s your fave design from our collection?

Rujazzle:  As always, I love anything graphic and colourful, so I adore all the rainbow designs!

Gurl News: We had a feeling you might be a rainbow kinda gal, thank you so much.
