It will come as no surprise to anyone that we here at Gurl Global are fans a good old brunch, especially when it’s combined with a drag show.
With UK vs The World returning to the BBC this month, our good friends over at Bobby’s have arranged an incredible line-up of drag artists to entertain the house down (boots, yes gawddd, you better werq, okurrrrrr).
Naturally I, Thotter Stu, couldn’t resist attending the launch event and sharing my experience!
The Host
So first and foremost I was excited to meet a queen who is fresh to the Newcastle scene, who until Saturday I’d only seen looking stunning on Instagram.
Coco Vadose truly gives you a warm welcome and immediately sets a positive vibe to the afternoon, with a lovely smile and a friendly attitude. I went over to say hello properly and was greeted with a nice cuddle then asked if there was any songs I’d like to hear before the brunch officially started, what more can you ask for?
Throughout the afternoon Coco kept everyone laughing, interacted well with the crowd and had us all in great spirits for the duration.
Here’s a selfie with our fabulous host (before the drinks):

The special guest
For the first of the brunches our performer was the one and only silly sausage herself, Choriza May!
Now I’ve known this Puta for several years, been to far too many of her shows and we have that wonderful kinda queer relationship where you’ll be damn shady, but you’ve got each others backs. At this point it’s just a case of bumping into a friend who happens to have been on the TV a few times and does drag, so I’ll try and be objective from a crowd perspective.
She literally came and said hello to every single person in the audience, made sure they were enjoying themselves and even stopped for a selfie before the show had started. You can really tell when a queen feels at home among their fellow queer people and this was exactly the vibe
The hosting was that fun combination of camp, silly and friendly with a touch of shade thrown in for good measure, exactly what you’d expect from a Choriza show.

Queen of shots
As a little bonus to our hosts/performers it was also a pleasure to see one of resident dazzlers, the epitome of camp stupidity herself, Dixon Stones was wandering around service shots to provide a little pallet cleanser between glasses of fizz.
Service with a smile and a wiggle from this one is always welcome!

The boozy bit
So for the full 2 hour duration of the brunch there is free-flowing prosecco and if you’re anything like me, you’re always expecting unlimited fizz to perhaps not taste all that great.
Well safe to say I was very pleasantly surprised when the first glass was poured, there was no questionable aftertaste and it was actually easy to drink. You’ve even got the option of free mixers, which I fully took advantage of and sweetened the processco further with some blackcurrant (for real, give it a go).
Now I’ve done several a brunch in my time and if you have too, I’m sure you’ll agree that it’s a bit of a peeve to be waiting a lifetime between drink top ups when you’re on the clock. I think the longest I went with an empty glass was maybe 2 minutes and that was only for the very attentive and friendly staff to go grab another bottle, talk about great service!

Eatin’ ain’t cheatin’
Now I may be from the North where we’re known for handling our drinks, but as a man of let’s say slightly older than 21, I’ve fully embraced that having a snack at some point during a drinking session is a blessing.
At the Bobby’s brunch you’ll be served a classic bar essential of nachos, the perfect salty snack to soak up just enough alcohol to stop you from being THAT messy person at 6pm.
A solid portion of warm nachos with separated dips and a generous portion of cheese served in environmentally friendly packaging…well I’m sold!
Keeping things simple and easy to eat was a great way to allow the audience to continue enjoying both the fizz and the show without the distraction of some hard to hold dish that would probably give you heartburn later – truly onto a winner right there.

The performances
It’s a drag brunch so you better strap yourself in for a good time, which is exactly what we got!
Coco gave us two wonderful and very different numbers, the first being a high energy dance moment that kicked off the party in style, followed later by a comedy number with a bit of spoken word to tickle our funny bones after the third….fourth….or maybe fifth drink.
Choriza treated us to three of her original songs, starting with the classic “My Pussy Is Like a Peach“, a bit of “Cho Cho Choriza May” and then her incredible new track “Party In Hell” to end on a high once we were all good and tipsy – we do love a live vocal moment.
Here’s a couple of clips to tease, if you want the full thing, get to a show sis!
It’s all fun and games
As if the booze, food and performances weren’t enough, our two fabulous queens also had the crowd playing along with some cute little games.
First up we had musical statues, a very daft nostalgic throwback to our 90’s school disco realness and a great excuse to get the three finalists up on the stage for chat while they competed for an amazing prize….. one signed Chorizo from Choriza!
Our next game was a super fun and really competitive game of musical bingo, which had us listening out for a whole bunch of bops to clear our bingo cards in the hopes or winning……a signed paella for two from Choriza (She’s Spanish btw, just so you know).
Yes, they both ended up coming home with me and no, the paella doesn’t survive being out of the fridge for 24 hours, so it’s not on eBay for you die hard stans.

What’s next?
So you might have missed the launch, but rest assured there are plenty of incredible things to come over the next 7 weeks, with some delicious drag race divas ready to serve on stage.
This is your chance to see Spanish Sensation Arantxa Castilla La Mancha, Demonic Dutchess Keta Minaj, Fashion legend A’Whora, People’s Princess Baga Chipz, Down Under Doll Hannah Conda and naturally the return of silliest sausage Choriza May – now that’s an iconic line up.
If the bottomless vibe isn’t something you’re feeling, there’s also the option to grab a ticket for the show and simply enjoy a free welcome drink with it.
Get your tickets right here and come join the fun!
